The Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies (ACCIMT) has partnered with the Ministry of Science and Technology to overhaul and upgrade decommissioned medical gear at the Rheumatology and Rehabilitation Hospital in Ragama. This initiative has already yielded incredible cost savings, with engineers restoring a first batch of specialized apparatus—such as patient standing supports, multi-monitors, and tilting bed controllers—valued at nearly Rs. 3 million for just Rs. 5,000. Beyond basic repairs, the engineering team is actively redesigning assistive-care devices to better serve physically challenged patients. As work continues on a second batch of broken equipment, the project is successfully moving the hospital away from its heavy reliance on expensive foreign imports.
