FALLEN OBJECT IS A RARE TYPE OF IRON METEORITE

The meteorite that has fallen to Sankabodhi Viharaya, Pulasthipura, Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka on 27th November 2004 at 1.20 p.m. (7.20 UT) is confirmed as an Iron Meteorite. Yatigala Upathissa thero has seen a blue color smoke tail when it came down. Though the meterotie was shining with metallic bluish colour at the time of fallen, within twenty four hours after it encountered with the earth’s atmosphere with oxygen, its colour has become brownish black due to oxidation.

The fallen object has created a crater with length 3.6 cm, width 3.3 cm and depth 3.0 cm size on the sand layer in temple garden. The black color fusion crust on the specimen, crust particles found around the crater and ash dust spreaded around the object complies with the basic characteristics of identifying a meteorite. It also possessed some magnetism.

After conducting X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry analysis and several other tests the object fallen to Pulasthipura is confirmed as a rare type iron meteorite consisting of elements Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Zn. The meteorite with weight 47.015 g , Specific Gravity 4.75 was the first meteorite tested after the inception of meteorite testing laboratory at the Arthur C. Clarke institute for Modern Technologies, said Dr. Chandana Jayaratne. Further studies will be continued to find out the origin of the meteorite, whether it’s from the asteroid belt, inner solar system or originated out side the solar system.
