The ACCIMT, (formerly known as the ACCMT) which was under the purview of the Ministry of Higher Education in 1984 was brought under the purview of the Ministry of Industries, Science and Technology in 1990. It came under the purview of the Ministry of Science and Technology in August 1994. With the establishment of the new Ministry for Economic Reform, Science and Technology, in December 2000 the ACCIMT too was transferred under its purview. In 2010, the institute came under the purview of the newly constituted Ministry of Technology and Research.
