| Our Mandate
Accelerating the
introduction of modern technologies such as Communication
and related Sciences, Information Technology, Electronics,
Micro-electronics, Space Technologies, Robotics, Photonics
and new materials to Sri Lanka by initiating, promoting
and conducting research and development in the application
of above technologies.
Providing research and development
support to the Government and private sector undertakings
in the application of above technologies.
Training of personnel in above
technologies to meet the needs of the Government and
private sector undertakings.
Promoting future studies.
History
The Institute was established in 1984
under the name Arthur C Clarke Center for Modern Technologies
(ACCMT) by an Act of Parliament to accelerate the process
of introduction and development of modern technologies
in the fields of Communications, Computers, Energy,
Space Technologies and Robotics, through the provision
of training and research facilities. Basic infrastructure
was established in 1986 and the technical activities
commenced in early 1987. With the introduction of the
new Science and Technology Act in 1998 the Centre was
re-named as the Arthur C Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies
(ACCIMT).
Today
As of today the Institute is actively
involved in the areas of Communications, Electronics,
Microelectronics and Information Technology where a
team of engineers, scientists and other related professionals
are working towards self-reliance in the areas related
to modern technologies.
Besides extensive R&D activities,
Institute is heavily involved in Continuing Professional
Development (CPD) activities and youth training programmes. In addition to its consultancy services for the industry.
Institute has the infrastructure and human resources
for development of products, systems and techniques
for industrial applications in electronics, communications
and IT (ECI) sectors, with exports in mind.
Current Services
- Research and Development
- Continuing Professional Development Programmes
- Consultancy Services / Industrial Assistance
- Training Programmes for Youth
- Library / Information Services
Research and Development
The research and development laboratories
of the Institute are well equipped with modern instrumentation
and computer systems, which support applied research
and product development related to electronics, telecommunications
and microprocessor based hardware. Currently the institute
has undertaken various demand driven research and development
projects from both government and the private sector
with a view to promote local manufacture of high-tech
products. The research and development team of the Institute
is quite dedicated towards internationally competitive
design and development activities.
Continuing Professional Development
(CPD) Programmes
From time to time the Institute announces
high-tech training programmes for professionals and
senior managers who are serving the local industrial
sector. These short-term training programmes are geared
to provide the most up-to-date information in the subject
areas related to microelectronic applications, communications
and computer systems. These short term courses have
a fair component of hands-on sessions.
Consultancy Services/ Industrial
Assistance
The Institute's professional staff who
are well experienced and highly skilled in managing
and servicing high-tech industrial systems, offer their
expertise and the laboratory facilities to the local
industry with a view to assist managing modern industrial
systems such as microprocessor based machinery, telecom
systems, information systems and computer networks etc.
Further, the Institute's instrumentation division offers
diagnostic and calibration services for sophisticated
instrumentation.
Training Programmes for Youth
In order to assist the development of
the skills of the younger generation, the Institute
provides training programmes related to electronic engineering
as well as other modern topics. Some of these programmes
are conducted in collaboration with other industrial
Institutions for local/ overseas participants.
Institute has launched a district level
astronomy training programme for school children since
the commissioning of the 45cm Cassagrain reflecting
telescope donated by the government of Japan. This programme
covers lectures and practical observation sessions in
astronomy.
ACCIMT Library / Information Services
The The Library Institutional Membership
has been introduced by the Institute to meet the current
demand from the technical, non technical professionals
and from the decision makers of the private and public
sector institutions to access latest, scientific and
technical information.
National and International Links
The ACCIMT is closely associated with
the local universities particularly with the University
of Moratuwa and other industrial institutions. It has
close links with foreign Universities as well as UN
agencies etc. where several collaborative programmes
are currently under consideration.
Future Plans
It has been planned to set up an Arthur C Clarke Foundation
for Future Studies in the United Kingdom by well-wishers
of Sir Arthur C. Clarke. This is expected to be linked-up
via satellite with the ACCIMT, Sri Lanka to have combined
R & D projects.
