Point-of-Care Device for Rapid COVID-19 Diagnosis

Development of a Point-of-Care Device for Rapid COVID-19 Diagnosis

COVID-19 pandemic has become a major public health issue in Sri Lanka. As there is no vaccine rapid diagnosis is essential to contain the disease. ACCIMT, in collaboration with University of Moratuwa, has initiated a project to develop a portable Point-of-Care (PoC) device for rapid and cost-effective diagnosis—an alternative to RT-qPCR. Diagnosis of COVID-19 via PoC device is based on integrating loop-mediated isothermal amplification and fluorescence signal detection. This adapted technique would be similar to RT-qPCR in specificity and sensitivity.  Upon completion of this project, COVID-19 diagnosis could be achieved within 5 – 25 minutes after extraction of viral RNAs from the patients’ sample.
